1. Havana

You can’t go to Cuba without visiting the city of Havana. The capital city is home to some of the world’s best-known landmarks, but it’s also full of art galleries and museums. It’s located on the northern coast of Cuba and has many historical buildings from the Spanish colonial period that have been restored.

You’ll need to reserve your hotel room in advance if you want to stay in Havana. The city has a great selection of guesthouses, hotels and hostels, but if you want to experience life on the street, you’ll need to book online before you arrive.

Havana is an exciting place for women travelers because there are so many things to do that don’t involve drinking. You’ll find plenty of restaurants serving delicious Cuban food (and lots of it), as well as dance clubs where you can groove with your girl tribe.

2. Trinidad

The Plaza Mayor, which is surrounded by outstanding neo-Baroque monuments, is the most popular attraction in Trinidad. There are also other museums that take you on a journey through the history of the great battles and amazing cultural treasures. The Palacio Brunet estate is a stunning architectural reproduction that holds the most remarkable collection of 19th-century antiques and artworks. Local stores and restaurants offer a taste of a variety of Cuban cuisines.

3. Varadero

It is a popular beach resort with many miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline with gorgeous beaches of white sands and mild blue seas. Within the Parque Josone National Park, there are lakes, abundant fauna, floral gardens, bridges, and caves. It also features the Bellamar Caves, which are roughly 150 years old and have the most extensive subterranean systems.

4. Baracoa

Baracoa, also known as the “First City of Cuba,” has managed to preserve all of its colonial buildings, which appear gorgeous in the region. It is located in the middle of a rainforest and is an interesting spot to connect with nature while still having fun. El Yunque, a mountain above the city, attracts tourists who come to enjoy the stunning vistas and rich greenery. It is about 30 minutes away from the beautiful beaches.

Traveling to Cuba is easy and affordable, but there are some things you should consider before booking your trip.

Quick tips on how to travel safely in Cuba:

• Don’t leave your luggage unattended in public spaces.
• Watch what you buy and where it comes from.
• Always take taxis or public transportation.
• Don’t use ATMs that aren’t connected directly to your bank account (you will lose money!).
• Make sure your passport is current, that your visa is valid, and that you have enough cash on hand before leaving home (Cubans don’t carry much cash).
• Make sure you have travel insurance that covers Cuba. If something goes wrong, you’ll be able to get medical care and pay for hotel rooms or flights back home if necessary.
• Bring lots of extra cash (bills only). The U.S. dollar is the only currency accepted in Cuba, so don’t bring any bills or coins from your home country unless they are in good condition or completely new (just like cash machines don’t work).
• Bring sunscreen (and sunblock). Even in December, it can get very hot in Cuba, so bring plenty of sunscreen and/or sunblock with you if you want to avoid getting burned when you go outdoors.
• Bring a camera if you want to take pictures. Cuba is a beautiful place to visit but also one that is incredibly photogenic—it has lots of beaches, culture, and history for visitors to enjoy in addition to its natural beauty, so make sure you bring along some film or digital storage space.

Getting There

If you’re traveling from the United States, you can fly into Havana or Cienfuegos. If you’re coming from Canada, Mexico, or Europe, you’ll likely arrive in Havana. Once there, make your way to your resort by taxi or bus.
