The Hyderabad Lok Sabha seat, a bastion of the All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) since the mid-1980s, finds itself at the center of renewed political strategies as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) introduces Dr. Madhavi Latha as its candidate for the 2024 elections. This move signals the BJP’s intent to challenge the long-standing influence of the Owaisi family in the region, a dynasty that has held sway over the constituency for nearly four decades.

Since 1984, the constituency has been under the control of the Owaisi family, starting with Sultan Salahuddin Owaisi. It has continued to remain with Asaduddin Owaisi since 2004. The 2019 elections saw Owaisi securing the seat with a significant margin over BJP’s Bhagavanth Rao. Looking ahead to the 2024 elections, the BJP is poised to intensify competition by nominating Dr. Madhavi Latha, whose candidacy was highlighted in the first list of 195 candidates released by the party. This strategic move underscores the BJP’s commitment to strengthening its presence in constituencies where it has historically been weaker.

Dr. Madhavi Latha has criticized the lack of development in Hyderabad’s Old City, attributing it to the prolonged governance of the Owaisi family. She emphasizes the need for change, rallying support with the motto “Dharmo rakshati rakshitah,” which translates to “Dharma protects those who protect it.”

An advocate for social issues and a prominent figure in the campaign against triple talaq, Dr. Madhavi Latha brings a diverse background to her political endeavors. With her roots in cultural activism, she chairs Hyderabad’s Virinchi Hospital and is recognized for her contributions as a Bharatnatyam dancer, an education enthusiast who homeschooled her children, and a dedicated NCC cadet with a background in political science.

Dr. Latha’s involvement with various charitable organizations, alongside her role as a religious speaker, highlights her commitment to community service and Hindu causes. As the first female candidate from the BJP to contest the Hyderabad seat, she represents a significant shift in the political landscape of the region.

Her candidature comes as a direct challenge to the established political order in Hyderabad’s Old City. Dr. Latha has been actively engaging with the community, pointing out issues related to cleanliness, education, and the welfare of children. She argues that the historical and cultural significance of the Old City has been overshadowed by neglect, calling for immediate action to address these concerns.

As the political atmosphere heats up in anticipation of the 2024 elections, Dr. Madhavi Latha’s candidacy is set to test the waters in a constituency long dominated by the Owaisi family. Her vision for Hyderabad, backed by a rigorous campaign, aims to reshape the political dialogue and bring development and progress to the forefront of the electoral battle.
