Deepali Kannaujiya’s Journey from Washing Clothes to Winning an American Scholarship

At just 16, Deepali Kannaujiya is already making waves in Lucknow. Born to humble parents who wash clothes for a living, Deepali’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Despite her family’s financial struggles, she never let circumstances define her dreams.

Deepali juggled teaching tuition classes and helping her mother wash clothes at home, all while excelling in her studies. Her hard work paid off when she was selected for the prestigious Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES), a scholarship from the U.S. State Department. This incredible opportunity will take her to America, where she will pursue her studies.

Her mother, Suman, couldn’t be prouder. “I don’t know what America is like, but I know my daughter will do well there,” she shared, beaming with pride from their modest home in Gomtinagar. Suman’s tireless work and dedication inspired Deepali to aim higher and push forward in life.

Deepali has big dreams—she wants to become a doctor. To reach that goal, she plans to take up science in the 12th grade and secure a spot in a top medical college.

For Deepali, her mother has always been her guiding light. “My mother is my biggest inspiration,” Deepali said before flying to America in August. “She worked so hard for our family. She may not have been able to study much herself, but she taught me the value of education and staying focused.
