Empowering Uttarakhand Women: Initiatives and Commitments by the State Government

Uttarakhand‘s Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, announced on Monday that the state will soon introduce a self-employment scheme specifically tailored for single women. Dhami emphasized the significant contributions of women across various sectors, stating that they have proven themselves capable and are working alongside men in various capacities. He made these remarks at the conclusion of the Women Empowerment and Security Week event.

Highlighting the role of women in driving the rural economy, especially in remote hill areas, Dhami commended their efforts in strengthening their households’ financial stability through self-help groups. He also acknowledged the impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives, such as linking 23 crore women to banks through Jan Dhan accounts, in promoting financial inclusion nationwide.

Dhami reiterated the government’s commitment to women’s welfare and empowerment, citing various measures taken to ensure their socio-economic development. He emphasized that initiatives ranging from financial inclusion to social security, healthcare, education, and entrepreneurship have been implemented to place women at the forefront of India’s development trajectory, with further advancements anticipated in the future.

In a significant move towards gender equality, Dhami highlighted a legislation enacted by the state government, which mandates 30 per cent reservation for women domiciled in Uttarakhand in public services.

During the event, Chief Minister Dhami facilitated the digital transfer of Rs 1.89 crore to beneficiaries of the Vatsalya Yojana. This scheme provides financial assistance of Rs 3,000 per month to children orphaned due to the COVID-19 pandemic until they reach the age of 21.

Rekha Arya, the Minister for Women Empowerment and Child Development, underscored the government’s commitment to social empowerment programs for women. She urged women to take advantage of the various schemes and initiatives being implemented by different government departments to enhance their socio-economic status and overall well-being.
