Discover the Thrill of Harihar Fort: A Must-Visit Adventure

Harihar Fort, also known as Harish Fort or Harshgad, sits atop the Harshgarh Hill in the Sahyadri mountain range of Nashik, Maharashtra. This fort is famous for its challenging trek and stunning views.

Why Harihar Fort is Unique

The path to Harihar Fort is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. You’ll need to climb 117 narrow steps, each just one meter wide, to reach the fort. About halfway up, you’ll find the main gate, called Maha Darwaja, which is still in great condition. From the top, you can see the beautiful Basgarh and Brahma hills.

Harihar Fort is built on a triangular rock. Its three faces are almost vertical, and the stairs to the top are carved directly into the rock. This makes it the only fort with “Rock Cut Steps.”

Location and History

Harihar Fort is 48 km from Igatpuri in Nashik. It stands 3,676 feet above sea level in the Trimbakeshwar range. The fort is known for its unique rock formations and attracts many visitors who come to see the cut steps. There are two villages at the base of the fort: Nirgudpada and Harshewadi. The climb from Harshewadi is easier than from Nirgudpada.

Historically, Harihar Fort has changed hands many times. It was once controlled by the Nizamshah of Ahmednagar. In 1636, Shahaji Raja captured it, but it later fell to the Mughals. In 1670, Moropant Pingale took it back, but by 1689, it was under Mughal control again. Finally, in 1818, British officer Captain Briggs conquered the fort. The British often destroyed forts to prevent reuse, but Briggs was impressed by the fort’s stairs and spared it.

Trade and Defense

Harihar Fort was crucial for monitoring trade routes. Goods were brought to Nashik through ghat routes, and Harihar Fort, along with Bhaskar Fort, helped guard these routes.

What to See at the Top

At the summit, there’s a temple with a Shivalinga and a large cave with no idols. The view is breathtaking, offering sights of Vaghera to the north, Tringalwadi, Kavanai, and Vaitarna Dharan to the south, Brahma, Kapda, and Brahmagiri mountains to the east, and Fani, Basgad, and Utvad to the west.
