Meenakshi Lekhi, the Union Minister for Culture, unveiled a new comic book titled “India’s Women Unsung Heroes,” which pays honour to all the lesser-known Indian women who battled for India’s independence and contributed to the country’s struggle for independence.
The book was released at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in New Delhi on January 27, 2022. It was prepared by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of India in partnership with Amar Chitra Katha.
“The book is a fitting tribute to the forgotten heroes of our freedom struggle as it celebrates the lives of women who led the charge and lit the flame of rebellion throughout the country. It contains stories of queens who battled imperialism and dedicated their lives for Maa Bharati,” said Lekhi regarding the book.
The book emphasises women’s courage and physical power. It highlights how Indian culture values women and does not allow for gender discrimination.
The stories of the unsung heroes will be told as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, according to Lekhi. She even stated that the book will include unheralded women warriors who were outspoken in their opposition to colonial powers. For example, Rani Abbakka fought the tyrant Portuguese for years.
“The movement to gain India’s independence brought together millions of people from every walk of life in protest of colonial rule. However, we all know only a few legendary, iconic leaders of the freedom struggle. In view of this, as a part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav commemorating 75 years of India’s Independence, the Government of India has decided to recall and remember forgotten heroes of our freedom struggle, many of whom might be renowned yet unknown to the new generation, “read the release.
