Aftab Ameen Poonawalla was detained by the Delhi Police on Saturday in connection with the gruesome killing of his live-in partner, Shraddha Walkar, 26. He has been placed in police custody for five days.

In India’s capital, New Delhi, a 28-year-old man, Aftab Ameen Poonawalla, is accused of murdering and cutting his girlfriend’s body into 35 pieces before disposing of her body parts in various locations throughout the city.

According to sources, the couple is from Maharashtra’s western Mumbai area. Together with his brother Ahad Poonawala, Aftab manages a social networking page for culinary bloggers.

He met Walkar during this period, fell in love with her, and moved to Delhi after their families objected to their marriage due to their different religious beliefs. The woman was from a Hindu family, and the man was a Muslim.

According to Mehrauli police, the couple was residing in a rented residence in the Chhatarpur neighbourhood. They both had jobs in call centres.

The incident happened on May 18 after Walkar allegedly began pressuring Aftab Ameen to marry her, police said.

Aftab killed his girlfriend by strangling her, and to get rid of her body, he was inspired by the character of the forensic specialist in the American crime thriller The Dexter from The Dexter, who also had a double life as a serial killer.

The event became public after Walkar ceased speaking with her parents. Checking her social media account, which had no recent posts, made her parents even more suspicious.

The girl’s father, Vikas, then travelled to Delhi to see how his daughter was doing, but discovered her apartment to be locked; as a result, he reported her daughter’s boyfriend to the police as a missing person.

In response to his complaint, the police opened an inquiry, located Aftab, and detained him.

During interrogation, Aftab admitted to the crime and claimed that they frequently quarrelled because Walkar was pressuring him for marriage.

Some Terrifying Details of the crime committed by Aftab Ameen

  1. According to Delhi Police, Aftab Ameen used Shraddha Walkar’s Instagram account up to June to give the appearance that she was still alive.
  2. Even after killing Walkar, Aftab Ameen continued to meet several women on the mobile dating app. He used to meet them in his apartment where he had kept Shraddha’s body parts in a refrigerator for 18 days.
  3. The accused confessed that he used to dispose the body parts wrapped in black foil at 2:00 AM because of little movement of people at this hour.
  4. After storing Shraddha’s body parts in the refrigerator, Aftab used to see her face every day.

Recent Developments in the case

The accused has so far led the police to find at least 10 of the 35 body parts of the victim that he had scattered across the forest. Furthermore, according to a Times Now story citing the Delhi police, Aaftab used the money he moved from Shraddha’s bank account to his own to purchase a refrigerator, where he stored the cut body parts.

Recent sources claim that Poonawala’s family, who moved out of their Mumbai home a week ago with the assistance of Aaftab, is currently untraceable and in an undisclosed location. The Maharashtra police confirmed that “Aaftab Poonawala was called twice for questioning, once last month and the second time on November 3.” He did, however, claim that she moved out and “they do not live together” any longer at the time. The police report says that after that, whenever he was called in for questioning, he never “showed unrest or nervousness on his face.”

Given the numerous inconsistencies in his narrative, the police also informed ANI that they would seek a mental and psychological evaluation to help them confirm whether he is telling the truth and “understand his mental state.” During this time, the Delhi police also requested permission from the court to do a narco test on the accused.
