Seema Kushwaha The Iron Lady Who Got Nirbhaya To Justice

Seema Kushwaha has been in the news for the past few days. The 36-year-old Supreme Court lawyer, who has been leading the battle for getting justice in one of the most heinous crimes India has witnessed.

As the complainant’s lawyer in the infamous Nirbhaya gangrape case, she used to participate in vigils for Nirbhaya’s victim as a student and was closely following the case since then. It was after graduating in 2014 that she became Asha Devi’s lawyer officially. She has been at the side of Asha Devi, mother of the Nirbhaya gangrape victim, in every court appearance and press meets. It was the much-delayed execution of the four culprits in the case, who were sentenced to death in 2013, on March 20, 2020, that put Seema in the spotlight again.

Kushwaha, the native of Uttar Pradesh’s Etawa, is an alumnus of Delhi University who was preparing for Civil Services when she first heard about the shocking incident. After graduating in 2014, she joined the battle to fight for justice for Nirbhaya and she finally won the battle.

The convicts kept appealing against the death sentence which kept justice abey. During this time, lawyer Seema Kushwaha constantly questioned the delay in the judgment and fought to uphold the death sentence for the convicts.

Recently, when the Nirbhaya case trial came to its conclusion, just after the four perpetrators of the Nirbhaya case were hanged on March Seema said, “Nirbhaya finally got justice.”
