Bindyarani Devi’s 196kg Triumph: 3 Key Moments from Her Bronze Medal Win

Bindyarani Devi, the accomplished weightlifter from India, added another feather to her cap by clinching the bronze medal in the women’s 55kg event at the IWF World Cup held in Phuket, Thailand. The Commonwealth Games medallist showcased her prowess with a commendable performance, despite competing in a non-Olympic weight class.

The 25-year-old athlete exhibited her strength and skill by lifting a total of 196kg, comprising an 83kg snatch and a 113kg clean and jerk, securing the last spot on the podium. While this achievement is remarkable, it falls short of her previous accomplishments, notably her silver medal at the CWG in Birmingham where she lifted a total of 203kg in 2022.

Despite her impressive display, Bindyarani’s performance at the World Cup was somewhat underwhelming, with only three legal lifts out of six attempts. Her total lift was 38kg less than that of Kang Hyon Gyong from North Korea, who clinched the gold medal with an impressive effort of 234kg.

Taking the silver medal in the clean and jerk section for her 113kg lift, Bindyarani demonstrated her proficiency in this aspect of the sport. It’s important to note that medals are awarded separately for snatch, clean and jerk, and total lift in continental, World Cups, and World Championships.

However, despite her medal-winning performance at the final Olympic qualifying event, Bindyarani finds herself out of contention for the Paris Games. Having moved up to the 59kg weight class, which features in the Paris Olympics, she competed in the 2022 world championships in that category, finishing 25th. Despite switching back to her old 55kg weight division, in which she won an Asian Championship silver last year, Bindyarani currently stands at 29th in the 59kg Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR), effectively ruling her out of the top 10 positions required for Olympic qualification.

Bindyarani Devi’s journey in weightlifting has been marked by dedication, perseverance, and notable achievements. While the bronze medal at the IWF World Cup is a testament to her talent, her resilience in the face of challenges and setbacks underscores her status as a formidable athlete. As she continues to strive for excellence, Bindyarani Devi remains an inspiration to aspiring athletes across the globe.
