Black lives matter

A movement that was budding for years after continuous unabashed racism against afro-american masses of the United States of America. The Black Lives Matter (BLM) organisation on movement against incidents of blatant police brutality and racial profiling against the black skinned people of the US was initiated in the year 2013 by Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi. The movement began in the United States and now has stepped in many countries around the globe. From Canada, Australia, United Kingdom to Denmark, Germany and Japan, the Black Lives Matter movement has presented itself against the violence and brutality.

The movement was initiated after an African-American teen named Trayvon Martin was shot to death by a policeman in 2013. With millions of hashtags on #blacklivesmatter, the movement began its course. Over the years, the movement has garnered huge popularity, however the brutality does not seem to fade away. After the ‘13 incident, another case surfaced where two Afro-Americans Michael Brown of St. Louis and Eric Garner of New York City. This is when the movement earned global recognition.

The Black Lives Matter movement follows the principle of Globalism, Diversity, Empathy, Justice and Intergenerationality. Following this, the movement aims to speak up against the inhumane police brutality.

Over the years, many cases has surfaced regarding brutality and racial profiling. This movement again garnered fresh attention after the death of Late George Floyd in Minneapolis, 2020 by the hands of police officer Derek Chauvin. After Folyd’s death, millions of people went on social media to protest against the atrocious behaviour and thousands marched down the streets of the United States.

The use of power and force which can neither be justified nor accepted has been in the States and other countries for hundreds of years now. From Slavery to shelving basic human rights, the black lives have been facing such hatred, discrimination and injustice since time immerorial. Large scale organisations like the KKK and the Skinheads have shamelessly and inhumanely discriminated and harassed the afro-Americans and other individuals from different ethnicities. Organisations like Black Lives Matter are the ones who are fighting for justice, fighting for rights, fighting for the wellbeing of their people. For decades, people are fighting for justice and from the looks of it, they will fight for another few decades. This difference and discrimination has cost lives more than anyone can possibly fathom and movements like Black Lives Matter will act as a shield to build back the equality, empathy and justice that the people deserve.

#Black_Lives_Matter has been circulating on social media platforms for years now. This is the need of the hour, even though there have been protests since 2013, police brutality still exists. This just gives us all the more reason to believe in the movement and other movements similar to this. In order to stop this racism and brutality, Black Lives Matter has to grow even further. Its presence has certainly made a positive impact, irrespective of the magnitude and as the movement along with its hashtag grows, police brutality and racial violence can be stopped and eventually eradicated.
