Michelle: the equally important Obama

There’s a beautiful anecdote about the equally important Obama, Michelle Obama, that is circulating on the Internet and goes like this,

“One night President Obama and his wife Michelle decided to do something out of routine and go for a casual dinner at a restaurant that wasn’t too luxurious. When they were seated, the owner of the restaurant asked the president’s secret service if he could please speak to the First Lady in private. They obliged and Michelle had a conversation with the owner. Following this conversation, President Obama asked Michelle, “Why was he so interested in talking to you.” She mentioned that in her teenage years, he had been madly in love with her. President Obama then said, “So if you had married him, you would now be the owner of this lovely restaurant,” to which Michelle responded, “No. If I had married him, he would now be the President.”

The veracity of this claim has not been tested, but it does make for wonderful reading and is also apt for a woman who was once the most powerful person on Planet Earth and holds a plethora of firsts to make any list of Sheroes across the globe. According to Wikipedia, she is

  • First African American first lady to be
  • First lady to attend an Ivy League university for her undergraduate degree. She majored in sociology and minored in African-American studies at Princeton University, graduating cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in 1985.
  • First first lady to announce the winner of an Oscar (Best Picture which went to Argo)

And though First Lady no longer, she still is in the thick of things. On the eve of her 56th birthday, she’s announced a series on Instagram’s called A Year of Firsts. To be aired on IGTV, the episodes of the show will feature around real, first-generation college freshmen across the United States. The project in collaboration with Reacher High aims at providing guidance, help to high school students who want to study further, something she has felt very strongly about. Her book Becoming is an inspirational read that inspires women to reach their full potential.
