Major spoilers ahead for the entire film. Do not read further if you haven’t watched Gajab Raat on Netflix yet.
Gajab Raat is a one-night crime thriller set in Delhi. Directed by Ritesh Shah and produced by Neeraj Pandey, it stars Manoj Bajpayee as a deeply corrupt sub-inspector whose ordinary night of graft turns into a moral crisis. Here is the complete story, key revelations, and how it ends.
Sub-Inspector Ajay Nirvit (Manoj Bajpayee) is an efficient but thoroughly corrupt Delhi Police officer. He routinely takes bribes, runs side schemes, and treats his position as a business. On this particular night, he is conducting a hotel raid in Connaught Place when he receives a call about a critically injured young woman who has been thrown from a moving car near PVR Plaza.
The woman is unidentified and in a coma. Multiple parties immediately converge on the hospital, each offering conflicting stories about her identity:
Ajay, sensing profit potential and power plays, keeps control of the case while various agencies and powerful figures try to take her into their custody. Assassins disguised as medical staff attempt to kill her in the hospital. Ajay begins digging deeper with the help of his tech contact, Vinayak.
The woman is Arya Sahni, a young investigative journalist working for a digital news outlet called Med News. Her parents eventually arrive and confirm her identity.
While being treated, doctors discover that Arya has swallowed an SD card. She ingested it to protect the evidence from her captors. Ajay retrieves it and has Vinayak unlock its contents.
The SD card contains:
Arya had traveled to Poland to cover a Global Pandemic Strategy Summit. There, she overheard and then secretly recorded a private meeting involving prominent Indian politician Suneeta Chaudhary (Divya Dutta) and two pharmaceutical figures, Adesh Solanki and Richard Hawkins.
They were planning to manufacture public panic about a new virus in India, create an artificial vaccine shortage, and profit massively from emergency imports and inflated prices. The scheme involved offshore accounts and media influencers.
Arya’s own editor betrayed her by tipping off the conspirators. She was abducted, tortured by Naveen Madhok and his men for the evidence, and thrown from the car when she tried to escape. She jumped out to save her life and the SD card.
The conspirators know Ajay’s reputation for corruption. Through intermediaries, they offer him a massive bribe of ₹5 crore to kill Arya in the hospital (via lethal injection or other means) and make the evidence disappear.
Ajay initially considers the money. However, as he learns the full truth, witnesses Arya’s parents’ despair, sees the repeated attempts on her life, and confronts the scale of the conspiracy, something shifts. He refuses the deal.
Naveen Madhok’s team attempts to eliminate both Arya and Ajay. Ajay fights them off in a tense confrontation.
Suneeta Chaudhary eventually arrives at the hospital herself. In the climactic confrontation, Ajay confronts her with the SD card evidence. He issues an ultimatum:
Faced with certain exposure (and knowing another copy may exist via Vinayak), Suneeta relents. She goes before the media outside the hospital and announces her resignation (framing it in softer terms). She also facilitates Arya’s transfer.
Ajay, Arya’s parents, and a medical team move the still-critical Arya out of the hospital on a stretcher and into an ambulance bound for Singapore treatment. Her recovery is not guaranteed, but she has been given a real chance to survive.
The film ends at dawn with this pragmatic compromise. Ajay reflects that the world needs a balance of good and bad, and that night the bad was overpowering the good too strongly. Inspired by Arya’s lone fight, he stood with her.
Gajab Raat deliberately avoids a clean, heroic victory or full institutional clean-up. It is about a compromised man making one consequential moral choice in a system designed to reward the opposite. The SD card becomes a tool for survival rather than sweeping justice.
That is the complete story of this extraordinary (and compromised) Delhi night.
