In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar magazine, the 36-year-old British actor, Keira Knightley explained how the problem of sexual harassment is “f****** depressing.”
She said, “every woman she knows has been subjected to sexual harassment, from being flashed to groped, including herself.”
In response to a question about whether she had experienced harassment, she said: “Yes! I mean, everybody has. Literally, I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been in some way, whether it’s being flashed at, or groped, or some guy saying they’re going to slit your throat, or punching you in the face, or whatever it is, everybody has.
“It was when women started listing all the precautions they take when they walk home to make sure they’re safe, and I thought, ‘I do every single one of them, and I don’t even think about it.’”
Knightley has previously talked about her discomfort shooting intimate scenes and how women are expected to either be flirty or maternal. “If I was making a story that was about that journey of motherhood and body acceptance, I feel like, I’m sorry, but that would have to be with a female filmmaker,” she said in January. “I don’t have an absolute ban, but I kind of do with men.”
The British actor has been outspoken on gender related issues on multiple occasions. She was widely applauded for her comments on Ellen DeGeneres show where she told Ellen that she has banned her three-year-old daughter from watching Disney films whose portrayal of women she disagrees with.
1950’s Cinderella and Little Mermaid were particularly not allowed to be watched by her children. When asked why, the actress said, Cinderalla “waits around for a rich guy to rescue her.”
“Don’t! Rescue yourself. Obviously!”
In Little Mermaid the actress said “the songs are great, but do not give your voice up for a man. Hello!”
We guess, she has a point there. What do you think?
