According to police, two children were critically injured after their mother stabbed them on a roadside north-west of Adelaide.

The 35-year-old woman is accused of stopping her car on Monday night and removing two young children before stabbing them.

According to police, the woman was detained on the North-South Motorway at Wingfield shortly before 11.30 p.m. by the public, who then called police.

The two children were taken in critical condition to Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

They are no longer in danger.

The woman was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital and is still being held there.

According to police, she will be charged with two counts of attempted murder.

The alleged attack, according to SA Premier Peter Malinauskas, is “almost impossible to comprehend.”

“God knows what circumstances led to this absolute tragedy,” he said if the allegations are proven true.

“I don’t want to make assumptions, but when we see a tragedy of this magnitude, I think there’s a very real possibility that this is a family that has had interactions with government agencies in the past, but [I] don’t know that at this stage and it’s not something I’d be able to comment on without appropriate briefing on it.”
