Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia makes history at Cannes with “All We Imagine as Light”

Payal Kapadia became the first Indian director to win the prestigious Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival for her debut feature film, “All We Imagine as Light.” This achievement marks a significant moment for Indian cinema on the international stage.

The film, a Malayalam-Hindi production, also holds the distinction of being the first by an Indian woman director to compete in the Cannes main competition. It follows the story of Prabha, a nurse, and her life’s unexpected turn after receiving a gift from her estranged husband. The narrative explores themes of female friendship and solidarity against the backdrop of a big-city life.

“All We Imagine as Light” received critical acclaim and a standing ovation at its screening. While it fell short of the Palme d’Or, the film’s Grand Prix win signifies its exceptional quality.

Kapadia’s achievement is part of a larger Indian success story at the 2024 Cannes. Chidananda S. Naik, an FTII student, won the La Cinef first prize for his film “Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know…” Additionally, Anasuya Sengupta became the first Indian actress to win the Cannes best actress award for her role in “The Shameless.”

This year’s Cannes Film Festival saw a diverse range of winners across various categories. Jacques Audiard secured the Jury Prize for his film “Emilia Perez,” while Miguel Gomes and Laura Wandel received the best director and best screenplay awards respectively for “Grand Tour” and “The Substance.”
