Samaira Hullur: Karnataka Teen Becomes One of India’s Youngest Commercial Pilots

At just 18 years old, Samaira Hullur from Vijayapura, Karnataka, has made a significant mark by becoming one of India’s youngest women to earn a commercial pilot license. Her proud parents shared this remarkable achievement, highlighting her journey and dedication.

Hullur’s aviation training began at the Vinod Yadav Aviation Academy (VYAA) in New Delhi. She later continued her education at the Carver Aviation Academy in Baramati, Maharashtra. Over one and a half years, she successfully cleared six exams and completed more than 200 hours of flight tests to obtain her commercial pilot license.

A Dream Takes Flight

Samaira’s fascination with flying was sparked during a helicopter joy ride at the Bijapur Utsav. Her father, Ameen, an interior designer, recalled, “We were seated next to the pilot, and Samaira was captivated by his style. She started asking him numerous questions.” That experience ignited her passion for aviation, leading her to decide on a career as a pilot. “We supported her by saving money and seeking out quality aviation academies,” Ameen told The Hindu.

Reflecting on her journey, Samaira said, “I always dreamt of being a pilot. My parents supported me wholeheartedly in my pursuit.” She attributes her success to the mentorship and support of Captain Tapesh Kumar and Vinod Yadav. Remarkably, she passed five of the six theory exams at 17 but had to wait until she turned 18 to take the radio transmission technology exam, due to age requirements.

Completing at least 200 flight hours was another crucial step toward earning her pilot’s license. Her parents in Vijayapura were thrilled to discover that she is one of the youngest women in India to achieve this milestone. Her mother, a fashion designer and teacher, also expressed immense pride in Samaira’s accomplishments.

Paving the Way: Ayesha Aziz’s Legacy

Samaira Hullur’s success story is reminiscent of Ayesha Aziz, who became India’s youngest and Kashmir’s first female pilot at the age of 16. In 2016, Ayesha, hailing from Baramulla, made history and now, at 25, she excels as a pilot for Go Airlines, flying the Airbus 360. Encouraged by her father, Ayesha began her flying lessons at 15, shortly after completing her 10th standard exams, and flew a Cessna 172R in January 2012.

Both Samaira and Ayesha’s achievements highlight the growing presence of women in aviation in India, breaking barriers and inspiring future generations to reach for the skies.
