The region was plagued by bloodshed and landmine blasts that drove away tourists, leaving the local residents isolated and devoid of opportunities for economic progress. Among those who suffered the most were the girls and women, who faced the brunt of these dire circumstances.
Savita, too, had to abandon her dreams of pursuing higher education after completing her 12th grade. In families struggling with financial constraints, education for girls often takes a backseat. Savita’s fate seemed sealed when she was married off at the tender age of nineteen, burdened with societal expectations and responsibilities she was ill-prepared to handle.
A Mother’s Resilience
Despite the hardships she endured, Savita clung to a singular hope – to shield her daughter from the tribulations of her own life. She yearned to provide her child with a better future and instill in her the virtues of education and self-reliance. But fate had more challenges in store for Savita. Abandoned by her husband, she was left to face a barrage of insults and accusations. The burden of running the household fell squarely on her shoulders, despite having never ventured out of her home alone. Determined to make ends meet, she took up odd jobs in other people’s homes, working tirelessly to support her daughter.
A Glimmer of Hope
In the midst of adversity, Savita discovered a ray of hope through a self-help group dedicated to empowering women. She learned about a government scheme that offered generous support for the adoption of e-rickshaws in the Dantewada region. The scheme required applicants to pay only 20 percent of the total cost, with the remaining amount covered by the government. The opportunity was tempting, but Savita faced an uphill battle as a woman in a region where people hesitated to venture even during daylight hours. However, her unwavering love for her daughter emboldened her to take the leap. After a month of rigorous training, Savita hit the streets of Dantewada as the first female e-rickshaw driver, ready to defy all odds.
Overcoming Obstacles
Savita’s journey was not without its hurdles. People initially hesitated to ride in her rickshaw, skeptical of a woman’s ability to navigate the treacherous terrain. Doubts gnawed at her, threatening to derail her dreams. How would she repay the Rs. 32,000 loan she had taken as the advance payment? But Savita’s determination and perseverance began to pay off. In no time, she started earning up to Rs. 500 a day, allowing her to move out of a rented house and provide her daughter with a quality education. Not content with merely ferrying children to school, Savita went above and beyond, providing free services to impoverished pregnant women in the area, ensuring they received timely medical care.
A Ripple of Empowerment
Today, Savita’s face radiates with pride and self-reliance. Her remarkable success has inspired over 50 women in Dantewada to follow in her footsteps. E-rickshaws, once associated with danger and fear, now dot the landscape, defying the preconceived notions held by the country and the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself, during his visit to Bijapur, sat in Savita Sahu’s rickshaw, symbolizing his recognition of her extraordinary achievements. In the 40th episode of his Mann Ki Baat program, he lauded this daughter of Chhattisgarh, her tenacity becoming a beacon of hope for all.
In the face of adversity, Savita Sahu has triumphed. Her unwavering spirit and unyielding determination have shattered stereotypes and transformed lives.
