In a quiet lane near the iconic Taj Mahal, there is a building covered in bold graffiti and filled with a warmth that rival’s the Indian sun. This is Sheroes Hangout, a place where the coffee is strong, the food is soulful, and the staff are redefining what it means to be a hero.
At first glance, it feels like any bohemian backpacker haunt. But as you are greeted by your server, the reality of the space settles in. The women here are survivors of acid attacks. In a society that has historically marginalized victims of such violence, Sheroes is a defiant “we are here” that has captured the heart of the world.
Founded by the Stop Acid Attacks campaign and the Chhanv Foundation, the cafe was built to solve a heartbreaking problem: the isolation that follows an attack. For many survivors, the physical pain is followed by a social withdrawal. Sheroes provides the opposite—a stage.
When you step into Sheroes, you aren’t just buying a meal; you are participating in a movement. You will see women who were once told to hide their faces now standing tall, sharing their stories, and pursuing dreams of becoming fashion designers, lawyers, and writers.
The magic isn’t just in the delicious aloo parathas—it’s in the laughter ringing out from the kitchen. It is a reminder that while acid can burn skin, it cannot touch a person’s spirit. You might arrive as a tourist, but you will leave as an ally.
Location Note: You can find Sheroes Hangout in Agra (near the Taj Mahal) and Lucknow. Both locations serve as critical support hubs for the Chhanv Foundation.
From stricter laws to survivor rights, explore how activism like the Stop Acid Attacks campaign reshaped India’s legal response to one of the most brutal crimes.
