Prepare to be amazed as we delve into the enchanting history of Gwalior’s Sun Temple. Initially constructed in 530 AD near Surajkund on Gwalior Fort by Matrichet Gop, only remnants of this ancient temple survive today. Fast forward to 1988, the Birla family revived the tradition of sun worship by constructing a new Sun Temple, inspired by the iconic Sun Temple of Konark.
The Sun Temple is not just an architectural marvel; it’s a spiritual oasis. The outer complex is stunningly beautiful, but wait until you step inside—the grandeur and spiritual ambiance are truly breathtaking.
Basant Kumar Ji Birla, inspired by Shri Ghanshyam Das Ji Birla, spearheaded the construction of this magnificent temple. The foundation stone was laid in 1984, and the consecration ceremony took place on January 23, 1988. Covering an area of 20,500 square feet and standing 76 feet 1 inch tall, this temple is a significant milestone in modern Indian temple architecture.
Designed to resemble Lord Surya’s chariot, the Vivaswan Temple features a sanctum sanctorum and main hall (Jagmohan) crafted as a chariot pulled by seven horses and adorned with 24 wheels, symbolizing the 24 fortnights of the year.
Surrounding the temple are small temples in the north-west and south, resembling open pavilions, each housing idols of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh in their coordinated forms.
The Sun Temple stands as the sole Sun temple of the twentieth century, symbolizing direct knowledge, light, time, direction, and the giver of life. Worshiping the Sun here is believed to bring peace and alleviate the malefic effects of planets.
