Ummul Kher: The Inspiring Journey from Adversity to IAS

Life can surprise us with challenges we never see coming. It’s in these tough moments that we discover our true strength. Ummul Kher, an inspiring IAS officer, faced immense hardships right from her childhood. Her story is one of grit, resilience, and sheer determination.

A Life of Struggles

Born in Pali, Rajasthan, Ummul Kher was diagnosed with a rare condition called bone fragility disorder. This disorder made her bones extremely weak and fragile, leading to 16 fractures and 8 surgeries throughout her life. Despite the physical pain and limitations, Ummul never let her condition define her.

Her family’s financial situation didn’t make things easier. They lived in slums in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area, with her father working as a street vendor selling clothes. When the slums were demolished, the family was forced to move to another slum in Trilokpuri.

Standing Tall Despite Setbacks

When Ummul was in 9th grade, her life took a drastic turn. Her mother had passed away, and her father remarried. Her stepmother didn’t support her education and wanted her to drop out of school. But Ummul refused to give up on her dreams. At just 14, she made the bold decision to leave her family and live on her own.

From 7th grade onwards, Ummul started giving tuitions to pay for her education. She was determined to succeed, and she did.

Academic Brilliance and Breaking Records

Despite her struggles, Ummul excelled in academics. She scored 91% in her 10th grade and 90% in her 12th. She went on to earn a degree in Psychology from Gargi College, Delhi University, followed by an MA and MPhil from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU).

In 2014, Ummul was selected for Japan’s prestigious International Leadership Training Program, becoming only the fourth Indian to be chosen for this in its 18-year history.

The IAS Dream

Her passion for learning didn’t stop there. After clearing the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), Ummul’s financial situation improved. With determination, she started preparing for the UPSC exam, and in her very first attempt in 2016, she secured an impressive 420th rank.

A Role Model for All

Ummul Kher’s journey from a poor, disabled girl living in slums to becoming an IAS officer is truly inspiring. She didn’t just overcome her financial and physical struggles; she created her own destiny. Today, Ummul is a role model for anyone who feels trapped by their circumstances.
