Urmi Negi is a shining star in the world of Garhwali cinema. Not only is she a gifted actress, but she’s also a talented filmmaker, writer, and director. Her dedication to her craft has recently been acknowledged with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, a national honor in India.
Negi’s journey began on the silver screen, where she captivated audiences with her performances alongside Bollywood legends like Mithun Chakraborty, Rajesh Khanna, and Devanand. But her true passion lies in the rich culture of Uttarakhand.
As Managing Director of Snowy Mountains Productions, she has brought to life three critically acclaimed Garhwali films: Phyoli, Suberu Gham, and Bathu 2. Each film not only showcases the breathtaking beauty of the Garhwal region, but also tackles important social issues. Suberu Gham and its sequel, Bathu 2, address the challenges faced by the mountains – the mass exodus of people to cities and the devastating impact of illegal liquor consumption.
Negi’s talent extends beyond acting. She penned the screenplays for all three of her films, demonstrating her keen understanding of storytelling. Notably, Suberu Gham received international recognition by winning the Best Regional Film award at the Canada Film Festival.
Her films resonate not only in the serene hills of Uttarakhand but also across India. Suberu Gham and Bathu 2 enjoyed success in Dehradun, Mumbai, Delhi, and other states with large populations of Uttarakhandis. Even prominent figures like Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and former Chief Ministers Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Trivendra Singh Rawat have lauded her work.
Negi’s artistic vision isn’t limited to Garhwali cinema. She has graced the screens of Bhojpuri and Nepali films as well. Her filmography includes “Kauthig,” “Ghar Jawane,” “Phyoli,” and “Sautan” alongside legends like Swami Dada and Mithun Chakraborty.
Currently, Negi is gearing up for her next project – a bilingual film in Hindi and Garhwali. With her dedication and talent, there’s no doubt that Urmi Negi will continue to captivate audiences and bring the stories of Uttarakhand to the world.
