Scary Video: Doctor removing 23 contact lenses from the patient’s eye

23 contact lenses were removed from the patient’s eye by Dr Katerina Kurteeva. On Instagram, Dr. Kurteeva shared a video of herself removing contact lenses from a woman’s eyelid. The video quickly went viral, amassing over a million views. The patient, according to the ophthalmologist’s post, changed her lenses 23 times in a row without ever taking the old ones out.

She shared the video on the Instagram page of California Eye Associates and wrote: “A rare occasion when someone ‘forgot’ to remove contact lenses at night and kept on putting one in every morning.” 23 days in a row! I got to deliver the contact lens bunch yesterday in my clinic.

Warning: the next video depicts the removal of several contact lenses from an eye.

The video depicts the doctor taking the woman’s eye lenses out one at a time. A mass of greenish lenses had gathered behind the woman’s eye. When they saw how many lenses were stacked inside of her patient’s eye, Dr. Katerina’s followers went into a fit. Many advised her to stop using contacts there and switch to wearing glasses instead. Another person suggested that the woman take preventative measures right away to avoid getting dementia.

A commenter expressed sympathy for the woman and said that she may not have thought about the dangers of sleeping with the lenses on because she is elderly. This woman allegedly held the record for having the most lenses stowed beneath her eye, according to Dr. Katerina Kurteeva.

Elaborating in a separate Instagram post, Dr. Katerina Kurteeva wrote: “Over a million views, glad to have an opportunity to educate the public about contact lens hygiene wear.

“I have carefully separated all the contact lenses and counted a total of 23. I had to use a very fine surgical instrument, a jeweller’s forceps, to separate the contact lenses.

“They were essentially glued together after sitting under the eyelid for a month.”

Speaking to Insider, Dr Kurteeva added: “In nearly 20 years of practice, I had never seen anything like it. The patient couldn’t believe it either and asked if I was sure about the number I was counting.”

She added that the patient was sent away with eye drops and was feeling “better already”.
