Atishi was born on June 8, 1981, into a Rajput Punjabi family in Delhi. Her parents, Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi, were both professors at Delhi University. Originally given the middle name ‘Marlena’—a blend of Marx and Lenin—by her parents, Atishi decided to simplify her name in 2018, just before the national elections. She chose to drop her surname and go by “Atishi,” emphasizing that her work should be the focal point rather than her family background.
Growing up in Delhi, Atishi attended Springdales School on Pusa Road. She pursued her undergraduate studies in History at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, graduating in 2001. Her academic journey continued at Oxford University, where she completed her master’s degree in History in 2003 on a Chevening scholarship. Her pursuit of excellence led her back to Oxford in 2005, this time as a Rhodes Scholar at Magdalen College.
