Why the 18th Habitat Film Festival 2026 is a Must-Visit for Cinephiles

While commercial blockbusters continue to dominate the box office with high-octane spectacles, a parallel cinematic revolution is quietly unfolding in the heart of the capital. The 18th Habitat Film Festival (HFF) 2026 is returning to celebrate the very best of contemporary independent cinema, thought-provoking documentaries, and boundary-pushing shorts from across India.

Running from May 15 to May 24, 2026, at the iconic India Habitat Centre (IHC), Lodhi Road, this 10-day cultural marathon brings together diverse narratives spanning 20 different languages, proving that the true strength of Indian storytelling lies in its regional depth.

A Masterfully Curated Canvas

Moving away from formulaic mainstream scripts, this year’s festival shines a spotlight on raw, authentic storytelling. The selection features critically acclaimed works from 2025–2026, alongside short film packages from the Indian Documentary Producers’ Association (IDPA) and the Film Critics Guild (FCG).

Key Highlights of the 2026 Lineup:

  • Opening Film: The festival kicks off on Friday, May 15, with Moham (Desire), directed by Fazil Razak, setting a high benchmark for the days to follow.
  • Asha Bhosle Tribute: A special retrospective honoring the legendary playback singer features a screening of the classic Umrao Jaan, commemorating her historic National Film Award win for the iconic track “Dil Cheez Kya Hai.”
  • Ritwik Ghatak Retrospective: For purists of parallel cinema, the festival offers rare big-screen presentations of restored masterpieces including Meghe Dhaka Tara, Komal Gandhar, and Subarnarekha.
  • New-Age Indie Voices: Highly anticipated screenings of contemporary works like Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound, Praveen Kandregula’s Paradha, and Tannishtha Chatterjee’s Full Plate will be accompanied by intimate, post-film director Q&A sessions.
