Harishchandragad Trek is one of the toughest treks in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. It’s a favorite among trekkers looking for a mix of adventure and history. This ancient hill fort is located at Malshej Ghat in the Ahmednagar district, standing tall at 4,670 feet.

Historical Significance

Harishchandragad has a rich history dating back to the 6th century, built during the Kalachuri dynasty. The fort’s caves, which were likely constructed in the 11th century, showcase diverse cultures that once thrived here. Key historical spots include:

  • Saptatirtha Pushkarni: A well-formed lake to the east of Harishchandreshwar temple, once adorned with idols of Lord Vishnu.
  • Kedareshwar Cave: Located beside Harishchandra temple, this cave houses a large Shiva Linga surrounded by cold water. The cave’s four pillars represent the four yugas (Satya Yuga, Treta Yuga, Dwapara Yuga, and Kali Yuga).
  • Harishchandra Temple: Another ancient structure that adds to the fort’s historical appeal.

Trekking Routes and Attractions

The Harishchandragad Trek offers multiple routes, each with its own surprises and challenges. Upon reaching the top, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views. Notable points include:

  • Taramati Peak: The fourth highest peak in Maharashtra, also known as Taramanchi. From here, you can see the Naneghat area and other nearby forts.

Exploring the Fort

The fort is dotted with many caves, some of which are still well-maintained and used for habitation. These caves add to the fort’s charm and provide a glimpse into its past.
