Since most EV motors depend on rare-earth materials that are overwhelmingly controlled by Chinese supply chains, this is a genuinely strategic breakthrough, built entirely by an Indian deep-tech team, backed by a 5 million dollar funding round and already in pilot programs with two and four wheeler manufacturers. Perhaps the most hard-earned achievement on this list, the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam attained first criticality on April 6, 2026, meaning its core began sustaining a controlled nuclear chain reaction for the first time. That single moment makes India only the second country in the world after Russia to operate a fast breeder reactor at this scale, and it opens the door to the third stage of India’s nuclear programme, built around thorium, one of the most abundant nuclear fuel resources India possesses. Prime Minister Modi called it a defining step in the country’s civil nuclear journey, and after two decades of painstaking engineering work, it is exactly that, a genuine and hard-fought scientific milestone that puts India in truly rare company.
