India’s Strangest Post Offices: One Floats, One Sits at 15,500 Feet, and One Is in Antarctica

Most people think of a post office as the dullest building on any street, a queue, a counter, a stamp. India quietly has three that break that rule entirely, one bobbing on a Himalayan lake, one perched higher than most aircraft fly over daily life, and one sitting on a frozen continent nobody actually lives on permanently. Here’s the story of each.

Quick Summary
  • Srinagar’s Floating Post Office on Dal Lake operates from a carved houseboat and claims to be the only one of its kind in the world
  • It was renamed from Nehru Park Post Office in 2011, and locals deposit roughly 1-2 crore rupees a month through it
  • Hikkim’s post office in Spiti Valley is widely cited as the world’s highest, run by the same postmaster since it opened in 1983
  • Hikkim’s post office shuts for about six months every winter due to heavy snowfall
  • India also operates a post office in Antarctica, first at Dakshin Gangotri and now at the Maitri research base
  • The Antarctic post office processed close to 10,000 letters in its very first year of operation

The Post Office That Floats on Dal Lake

Moored on the western edge of Srinagar’s Dal Lake sits an intricately carved maroon houseboat that doubles as a fully functioning post office, reportedly the only one of its kind anywhere in the world. It isn’t a gimmick built for tourists either, this is a genuine heritage institution that has existed since colonial times, originally known as the Nehru Park Post Office.

It only got its current, far more fitting name in 2011, when the then chief postmaster John Samuel rebranded it as the Floating Post Office, and added a small philately museum and souvenir shop inside the houseboat’s second room, right alongside the working counter. Every letter mailed from here gets stamped with a seal depicting a boatman rowing a shikara across the lake, a tiny postmark that doubles as a miniature postcard of Kashmir itself.

For visitors staying on nearby houseboats, rowing over to send a postcard back home has become something of a ritual. But locals don’t treat it as a novelty at all. Communities living around the lake reportedly deposit between one and two crore rupees a month through this single post office, making it a genuine financial lifeline for the area, not just a photo opportunity.

The Post Office at 15,500 Feet

High in Himachal Pradesh’s Spiti Valley, the tiny hamlet of Hikkim holds a title that draws visitors from across the country: home to the highest post office in the world. Estimates of its exact elevation vary slightly between sources, ranging from around 14,400 to 15,500 feet, but either way, it sits well above where most commercial flights consider a comfortable cruising altitude irrelevant to daily errands.

The post office opened on November 5, 1983, and has been run by the same man, postmaster Rinchen Chhering, ever since, meaning he’s held this single posting for well over three decades. His tiny office, which reportedly doubles as his own home, is the only real conduit connecting Hikkim’s small population to the outside world, especially given the near total absence of mobile signal or internet in the region. It handles everything from basic mail service to small savings accounts for local farmers and monks.

Winter shuts the whole operation down. Heavy snowfall cuts Hikkim off from the rest of the valley for roughly six months a year, and the post office simply closes until the roads open again. Travellers who make the steep uphill drive from the nearby town of Kaza specifically to mail a letter from here aren’t being dramatic, it genuinely is one of the more bragging-rights-worthy postmarks a postcard can carry.

The Post Office on a Continent With No Permanent Residents

The strangest entry on this list sits far outside India’s borders entirely. India has operated a post office in Antarctica, first established at the Dakshin Gangotri research station and later shifted to the country’s newer, more permanent base at Maitri. In its very first year of operation, the post office reportedly processed and cancelled nearly 10,000 letters, an extraordinary number given that Antarctica has no permanent civilian population at all, only rotating teams of scientists and support staff.

It exists mainly as a piece of philatelic history and national pride rather than a practical daily mail service, but it means India can technically claim a postmark from every climate extreme on Earth, from a frozen research base to a floating Kashmiri lake to a Himalayan peak closer to the clouds than to cell towers.

Why These Tiny Post Offices Matter More Than They Look

None of these three locations are busy by any normal standard. Hikkim processes a modest handful of letters a day. The Antarctic post office serves scientists, not civilians. Dal Lake’s floating office mostly handles postcards and local deposits rather than heavy mail traffic. But each one represents something India’s vast, 1.55 lakh-strong postal network rarely gets credit for: an insistence on reaching absolutely everywhere, no matter how remote, how cold, or how literally afloat the destination happens to be.
