Kalpana Chawla: The Girl Who Touched the Stars
Once upon a time in a small town called Karnal in India a girl named Kalpana Chawla was born in 1962. Kalpana was a dreamer with eyes that sparkled like the night sky. As a kid she loved gazing at stars and airplanes soaring above. Wow imagine a little girl lying on the grass counting stars and dreaming of flying among them!
Kalpana wasn’t just a dreamer she was super smart and worked hard in school. She loved science and math and told everyone I want to be an astronaut! People laughed because back then girls from small towns didn’t become astronauts. But Kalpana smiled and said Watch me!
After finishing school in India she flew to America to study aerospace engineering. She learned how to build airplanes and spaceships. Wow how cool is that? She worked day and night earning not one but two big degrees. Kalpana’s heart was set on the stars and nothing could stop her.
In 1997 Kalpana’s dream came true. She joined NASA and became the first Indian woman to go to space! She flew on a space shuttle called Columbia zooming 200 miles above Earth. Floating in space she saw our planet glowing blue and green. Wow imagine seeing Earth from space like a giant shiny marble!
Kalpana did experiments in space helping scientists learn new things. She was brave kind and always smiling. In 2003 she went on her second space mission but something went wrong. The shuttle broke apart during its return to Earth and Kalpana and her crew didn’t make it back. The world was sad but her courage lit up hearts everywhere.
Kalpana Chawla showed everyone that dreams can take you to the stars. Today schools and awards are named after her and kids in India and beyond look up at the sky and think I can do it too!
