The Festival of Colors: A Story of Holi
Once upon a time, in a kingdom far away, there lived a young prince named Prahlad.
Prahlad was a very kind and gentle boy. While his father, King Hiranyakashipu, was a very powerful and grumpy king who wanted everyone to bow down only to him, Prahlad chose to be different. He believed in kindness, love, and a great protector named Lord Vishnu.
This made the King very angry. He tried many times to stop Prahlad from being so kind, but Prahlad just kept smiling and helping others.
The King had a sister named Holika. She had a magical cloak that protected her from fire. The King asked Holika to sit in a bonfire with Prahlad, thinking the fire wouldn’t hurt her but would scare Prahlad.
But something magical happened! Because Prahlad’s heart was so full of goodness and love, the magical cloak flew off Holika’s shoulders and wrapped itself around Prahlad instead! Prahlad stayed safe and sound, and the fire couldn’t touch him.
This showed everyone that goodness and love are stronger than anger and mean tricks.
Why do we play with colors?
When the sun came up the next day, the people of the kingdom were so happy that Prahlad was safe! They wanted to celebrate. They didn’t have party poppers back then, so they grabbed handfuls of colorful flowers and bright powders.
They threw them into the air, shouting, “Holi Hai!” which means “It is Holi!”
Everyone looked like a walking rainbow. The red stood for love, the blue for the sky, the yellow for the sun, and the green for new leaves on the trees. On this day, everyone forgot their grumpiness. They hugged their friends, shared sweet treats like Gujiya, and promised to be kind to one another.
What Holi teaches us today:
- Spring is here: Holi happens when the flowers start to bloom and the cold winter goes away.
- Be Kind: Just like Prahlad, we should always choose to be kind, even if others are being grumpy.
- Forgive and Forget: It’s a day to say “sorry” if we were mean and to start fresh with a big, colorful hug.
So, when you see the bright pink and green powders today, remember: you are painting the world with your love and kindness!
