Mumbai woman succumbed to her injuries after being raped and tortured

The 32-year-old victim, who was brutally raped in Mumbai’s Sakinaka area in Andheri Eas, died while receiving treatment today. The police have said that the arrested accused had raped the deceased victim and beaten her up with a rod. He had inserted the rod in her private parts, leaving her critically injured.

The police had found her unconscious inside a stationary tempo at around 2:30 to 3:00 am at Khairani Road in the Sakinaka area, Mumbai. She had been bleeding profusely.

Reports suggest that the Mumbai Police teams were awaiting the woman to regain her consciousness to record her statement which could throw light on the entire episode, but unfortunately the victim succumbed to her injuries after battling for survival for almost 33 hours.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to probe the case, said Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale, adding that prima facie evidence revealed only one accused was involved in the crime.

“An SIT has been formed to probe the case. Chief Minister has ordered fast track trial in the case. Unfortunately, the victim died during treatment this morning and we have converted section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to section 302 (murder). The probe revealed there’s only one person involved in the execution of the crime,” said Mr Nagrale.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) said on Saturday it has taken suo moto cognisance of the crime and will start a probe soon. Rekha Sharma, the NCW chairperson, said that the commission will also extend help to the victim’s family. “It’s sad to know that the victim of #mumbai brutal rape has lost the battle. The police have failed to arrest the accused. @NCWIndia has taken up suo motu and would like to urge @CPMumbaiPolice to immediately arrest all the culprits and extend all the assistance to the family,” Sharma also tweeted.

Recently, there has been a spate of gruesome and horrific rape cases in Maharashtra. At least nine such cases have been reported in the last few days.

According to the Police Sub-Inspector of the Yevda police station, Dilip Patil, a complaint was registered claiming that a man repeatedly raped the 15-year-old minor and impregnated her. The victim died by suicide in Daryapur of Maharashtra’s Amravati. The rape accused has been arrested and sent to police remand till September 15.

In yet another case of kidnapping and rape of a minor, a six-year-old girl, who was sleeping next to her parents on a footpath adjacent to the bus stand near Pune railway station, was allegedly abducted by an auto-rickshaw driver and raped. The incident was reported on September 10.

A 16-year-old mentally challenged girl was raped in Vasai on September 7. The accused took her forcefully on his motorcycle to an unknown place, where she was sexually assaulted. The incident came to the light two days later after her kin lodged a complaint at the police station.

According to reports, the minor had left home around 10.30 pm to meet a friend at the railway station. But her friend did not turn up. An auto driver on the pretext of dropping her home took her to a lodge where he raped her. He also called his friends, who took turns to rape the girl at various places before they left her on board the Pune-Jammu Tawi Jhelum express train at around 5.30 pm on September 2.

Police had arrested three men for allegedly gang-raping a 17-year-old orphan girl at Vasai in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on August 28.
