Sheetal Devi: The 17-Year-Old Armless Archer Making History at the 2024 Paralympics

Sheetal Devi has made a remarkable impact on the world stage at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, capturing global attention with a stunning bull’s-eye that highlighted her extraordinary archery skills. At just 17, Devi is emerging as one of India’s brightest stars in the Paralympic arena, standing out as one of four archers competing without arms—and notably, the only female in this elite group. Born with phocomelia, a rare condition that prevented her arms from fully developing, Devi has defied the odds to excel in a sport that demands precision and strength.

Devi joins an elite group of archers who use alternative body parts to master the sport, including Team USA’s Matt Stutzman, Belgium’s Piotr Van Montagu, and Mexico’s Víctor Sardina Viveros. Devi, however, uses her feet to skillfully load and fire her bow and arrow, showcasing incredible adaptability and determination.

The video sparked widespread admiration, with one user commenting, “Sheetal Devi is poetry in motion. Just 17 years old.” Her achievements are fueling a growing interest in the Paralympics, bringing well-deserved attention to athletes with disabilities.

That same year, she also claimed gold at the Asian Para Games. Recognizing her outstanding contributions to the sport, World Archery honored Sheetal Devi as the Best Women’s Para Archer of the Year for 2023.

Devi’s journey is nothing short of inspirational, proving that with determination and skill, barriers can be shattered, and new heights can be reached.
