We Tested The Internet’s Favorite Skincare Products. Only These Were Worth Buying

Tried and Tested by Real Shee Power

The internet has a new skincare obsession roughly every eleven days. A serum goes viral on Tuesday, sells out by Thursday, and by the following Monday, three million people are convinced their skin was broken until this exact bottle fixed it. Some of that hype is earned. Most of it is a very well lit video and a strong hook.

So we did the unglamorous part. We pulled the ingredient panels, cross-checked the actual dermatology behind each formula, read past the five-star reviews into the three-star ones (that’s where the truth usually lives), and lined the results up against what these products are genuinely capable of doing versus what the algorithm is capable of selling. Six products made the cut. One is our clear winner. A couple are only worth it under very specific conditions. One should probably stay in your cart and nowhere near your face.

If you want the philosophy behind why we’re skeptical of the 10 step everything approach in the first place, our piece on skin minimalism and why less is genuinely more is a good primer before you read any further.

The Winner: COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence

Yes, it’s slime from a snail. No, that is not a reason to skip it, and honestly, by 2026 you should be over the ick.

Biggest Winner

COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence

96% snail secretion filtrate, no fragrance, no fuss, roughly $25 a bottle. It hydrates, calms irritation, and genuinely helps repair a compromised skin barrier, all backed by ingredients that have real research behind them rather than just a strong TikTok hashtag.

  • Skin type: Works across nearly all types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin
  • Price: Budget-friendly, no cult markup
  • Verdict: Worth every bit of the hype, and then some

Here’s the part the hype videos gloss over: snail mucin isn’t a gimmick ingredient. It’s rich in glycoproteins, hyaluronic acid, and glycolic acid in small enough concentrations to hydrate and gently support skin renewal without the irritation full strength exfoliants bring. It layers under literally anything. It doesn’t pill under makeup. And at roughly the price of a mid-tier lipstick, it’s one of the rare viral products where the cost has nothing to do with the marketing budget behind it. This is the one product on this list we’d tell a skeptical friend to buy blind.

Also Genuinely Worth It: La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume B5

This one won’t win any TikTok aesthetics awards. It comes in an unglamorous tube, it smells like nothing, and it will never trend on its own merits. That’s exactly why it’s earned a permanent place in a lot of dermatologists’ actual recommendations, rather than just influencer routines.

Formulated around panthenol (a vitamin B5 derivative) and centella asiatica, it’s built specifically for barrier repair: post-retinol irritation, over-exfoliated skin, windburn, the general fallout of trying six new serums in one week because the internet told you to. If your skin is currently annoyed with you for any reason, this is the product that stops the argument.

VERDICT

Not exciting. Extremely effective. Keep one in your bag at all times.

Worth It, With a Catch: Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Niacinamide Dew Drops

This is where the honesty gets slightly uncomfortable, because the marketing and the actual function of this product don’t quite match. Sold as a niacinamide serum for pore refinement and oil control, it’s genuinely lovely as an instant glow booster and makeup primer. As a long-term niacinamide treatment for actual skin texture improvement, the concentration and formulation are doing less heavy lifting than the packaging implies.

VERDICT

Buy it if you want a gorgeous, dewy base under makeup. Don’t buy it expecting it to replace a proper niacinamide treatment serum. Those two things are not the same product, no matter how the label reads.

Fun, Not Essential: Medicube Collagen Jelly Peel-Off Mask

There is something deeply satisfying about peeling a jelly mask off your face in one clean sheet, and TikTok knows it, which is exactly why this thing has millions of views attached to it. The collagen and PDRN (a regenerative ingredient borrowed from clinical dermatology) do provide a real, visible plumping effect immediately after use.

The catch: “immediately after use” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. This is a fantastic once-a-week ritual for a big event or a stressful week that deserves a little theatre. It is not, and was never going to be, a substitute for a consistent routine that actually changes your skin over months.

VERDICT

Buy it for the experience and the occasional glow-up before a big night. Don’t expect it to replace your actual routine.

Skip Unless Money Is Genuinely No Object: At-Home Microcurrent and LED Devices

We get why these are everywhere. The before-and-afters look dramatic, the multi-function promise (LED, microcurrent, radiofrequency, vibration, all in one gadget) sounds efficient, and watching your own jawline “lift” in real time on camera is undeniably satisfying content.

The problem is dosage and consistency. Clinical-grade microcurrent and LED devices used in dermatology offices deliver far higher, more calibrated intensities than anything cleared for at-home consumer use, and the visible results from most viral devices are largely temporary, muscle stimulation and fluid movement rather than lasting structural change. You’d need months of religious daily use to see anything close to what the fifteen-second demo video shows in real time.

VERDICT

If you have $150 to spare and enjoy the ritual, it won’t hurt you. If you’re choosing between this and a good retinol and a proper SPF, put your money there instead.

The One We’d Actually Tell You to Skip: Overhyped Peptide “Sculpting” Serums

This category, not any single bottle, is the one we’re most skeptical of. Peptide serums marketed with words like “sculpting,” “firming,” and “lifting” have flooded the market on the back of a handful of celebrity-adjacent brand launches. Peptides themselves are legitimate, well-studied ingredients that can support collagen signaling over time. The issue is concentration and marketing math: many viral “sculpting” serums use peptide percentages too low to meaningfully affect firmness, while charging a premium built almost entirely around the visible tightening effect of the film-forming agents in the formula, an effect that lasts for a few hours and has nothing to do with your actual collagen production.

VERDICT

Read the ingredient list, not the video. If peptides are buried at position twelve out of twenty, you’re paying for a temporary film, not a treatment.

The Actual Takeaway

Virality and efficacy are two completely different metrics, and the products that survive both, like the snail mucin essence topping this list, tend to have one thing in common: boring, well-documented, unglamorous ingredients doing exactly what they say on the label. The ones that don’t hold up tend to be selling a fifteen-second visual effect dressed up as a skincare breakthrough.

If you want a deeper dive into which specific ingredients are actually worth building a routine around (and which ones are just having a moment), our guide on the shift toward biocompatible skincare and our breakdown of whether India’s high-end beauty brands are worth the splurge are both worth reading next. And if you’ve been building a routine around the K-beauty playbook specifically, we’ve already stress-tested whether the 10-step K-beauty routine actually holds up in Indian climates.
