Spicy Chickpea and Mango Salad (Chana Aam ka Khatta Meetha)

Spicy Chickpea and Mango Salad (Chana Aam ka Khatta Meetha) is a delightful explosion of flavors and textures, perfect for the Indian palate. It’s tangy, sweet, spicy, and refreshing, with crunchy vegetables and protein-rich chickpeas.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cooked chickpeas (canned or dried)
  • 1 cup chopped ripe mango
  • 1/2 cup chopped red onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped cucumber
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 green chili, chopped (adjust for spice preference)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon chaat masala
  • Salt to taste

Optional Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon chopped mint leaves
  • 1/4 cup chopped roasted peanuts

Instructions:

  1. If using dried chickpeas, soak them overnight and cook them until tender. Drain and rinse.
  2. In a large bowl, combine chickpeas, mango, red onion, cucumber, cilantro, and green chili.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together lemon juice, cumin, chaat masala, and salt.
  4. Pour the dressing over the salad and toss gently to coat.
  5. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
  6. Garnish with chopped mint leaves and roasted peanuts (optional) and serve immediately.

Tips:

  • For a richer flavor, roast the chickpeas in the oven with a little oil and cumin powder before adding them to the salad.
  • If mangoes are not in season, you can substitute with another sweet fruit like pineapple or grapes.
  • For a vegan option, skip the peanuts.

This salad is a great side dish for any Indian meal or can be enjoyed on its own as a light lunch.
