Three Iranian Women Journalists Arrested and Transferred to Evin Prison Amid Protests

Iranian authorities have recently arrested three female journalists in the capital city of Tehran, according to local media.

This comes amid ongoing protests in the country sparked by the death of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested by morality police for violating the country’s dress code for women.

The authorities have reported that many people, including security forces, have been killed and thousands arrested during the protests, which they claim were instigated by the enemies of the Islamic republic.

The three journalists were reportedly transferred to Evin prison, where many of those arrested in connection with the protests are being held.

“In the past 48 hours, at least three female journalists, namely Melika Hashemi, Saideh Shafiei and Mehrnoush Zarei, have been arrested in Tehran,” reformist newspaper Etemad quoted the Tehran journalists’ union as saying.

The paper also stated that approximately 80 journalists have been arrested since the country’s unrest began four months ago. The report did not provide any information on the reason for their arrests.

Shafiei is a freelance journalist and novelist, Zarei writes for various reformist publications, and Hashemi works for an outlet named Shahr, as reported by local media.

In October, over 300 Iranian journalists signed a statement criticizing the authorities for their actions of “arresting colleagues and stripping them of their civil rights,” as reported by local media at the time.
