Women Voters Show Strong Support for BJP in Delhi Elections

Women voters played a crucial role in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, with a significant shift in their trust towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Despite the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) introducing women-centric schemes such as free bus travel, a large section of women voters leaned towards BJP this time.

BJP Dominates in Women-Majority Seats

Out of the 40 assembly constituencies in Delhi where more women voted than men, BJP secured a sweeping victory in 72.5% of these seats. The party won 29 of these 40 constituencies, while AAP managed to secure only 11. Women have consistently shown higher voter turnout in Delhi, with their participation exceeding that of men in 57% of the total 70 assembly seats.

Even in the 2020 elections, women outnumbered men in voting on more than 30 seats, prompting all three major political parties to introduce women-friendly schemes. However, the 2024 election results indicate that BJP’s promises resonated more effectively with women voters.

Increased Women’s Participation, Fewer Women MLAs

While women’s voter turnout increased in these elections, the number of women MLAs elected has declined. In the 2020 assembly elections, eight women MLAs were elected, but this number has dropped to five in 2024.

BJP fielded eight women candidates, while AAP and Congress each gave tickets to nine women candidates. Among the winners from BJP are Rekha Gupta, Shikha Rai, Poonam Sharma, and Neelam Pehalwan. AAP’s sole woman winner is Atishi.

Fulfilling Election Promises: The Next Step for BJP

Women voters placed their trust in BJP, believing in their election promises. Now, the party faces the challenge of delivering on these commitments. If BJP rolls out schemes such as free electricity, free water, free bus travel, Rs 2500 monthly financial assistance, and subsidized gas cylinders, it could further strengthen its appeal among women voters. Additional schemes are expected to be announced around Holi in March.

Higher Women Turnout in Rural and Reserved Seats

Women voters show strong support for bjp in delhi elections

Women led the voting turnout in Delhi’s rural, VIP, and reserved category seats. In the Badli assembly seat, 63.92% of women voted compared to 62.30% of men. Other high female voter turnout figures include:

  • Bawana: 60.29%
  • Mundka: 60.96%
  • Matiala: 61.39%
  • Bijwasan: 61.58%

Women also outnumbered men in voting in Palam, Mehrauli, Chhattarpur, Narela, and Nangloi Jat constituencies.

The increasing participation of women voters signals their growing political influence. As BJP takes charge, all eyes will be on how effectively it delivers on its promises to women, shaping future political dynamics in Delhi.
