Crispy Fish and Chips Recipe – A Classic British Dish

Crispy fish and chips have been a staple in British cuisine for centuries, and for good reason. This delicious dish is a classic that never goes out of style. The crispy batter and tender fish, combined with the warm, fluffy chips and tangy tartar sauce, make for a meal that is both comforting and satisfying.

Crispy Fish and Chips Recipe: Ingredients

  • 2 lbs cod or haddock fillets, cut into 4 pieces
  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 cups of vegetable oil
  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and sliced into thin chips
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup of mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp pickle relish
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp dill

Crispy Fish and Chips Recipe: Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking powder, garlic powder, and paprika.
  2. In a separate mixing bowl, beat the eggs and water together.
  3. Dip each fish fillet into the egg mixture, then coat it in the flour mixture, making sure to shake off any excess. Repeat with all of the fillets.
  4. In a large frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat. The oil should be deep enough to fully immerse the fish fillets.
  5. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the fish fillets into the pan. Fry for 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  6. While the fish is cooking, prepare the chips by boiling them in a pot of salted water for 4-5 minutes, until they are tender. Drain and pat dry.
  7. In a separate pan, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the chips and fry for 4-5 minutes, or until they are crispy and golden brown.
  8. For the tartar sauce, mix together the mayonnaise, pickle relish, lemon juice, and dill in a small bowl.
  9. Serve the fish and chips hot, with a side of tartar sauce.
