Gabby Petito’s boyfriend Brian Laundrie confessed to her murder before taking his own life

According to the FBI, before taking his own life, Brian Laundrie wrote in a notebook that he was responsible for Gabby Petito’s death.

“A review of the notebook revealed written statements by Mr. Laundrie claiming responsibility for Ms. Petito’s death,” the FBI’s Denver Field Office said in a statement released Friday.

“All logical investigative steps have been concluded in this case,” said Michael Schneider, the FBI Denver division special agent in charge, in the statement. “The investigation did not identify any other individuals other than Brian Laundrie directly involved in the tragic death of Gabby Petito.”

The body of Petito, who had been travelling with Laundrie across the US in a van, was found on 19 September at a campground near Grand Teton national park in northwestern Wyoming. A coroner determined she had died about three weeks earlier of “blunt-force injuries to the head and neck, with manual strangulation”.

Laundrie returned home to Florida in early September but went missing soon after. In October, his parents found an item belonging to him in a nature preserve near their house.

Further searching turned up Laundrie’s remains a revolver, backpack and notebook. Medical examiners determined Laundrie died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Grand Teton was the last place the couple visited during their van trip last summer that ended with Laundrie mysteriously returning home alone in the vehicle.

The couple documented their trip on Instagram. They crossed Colorado and on 12 August were stopped by police in Moab, Utah, after the two got into a scuffle.

Police video showed Petito describing a fight that escalated. Police concluded Petito was the aggressor but officers decided to separate them for the night rather than file charges.

Attorneys for the Petito and Laundrie families did not immediately respond Friday to emails and text messages seeking comment about the FBI’s conclusions.
