On the solemn day of September 5th, we remember the brave heart Neerja Bhanot, a 23-year-old who faced terrifying terrorists with extraordinary courage. Neerja’s bravery not only saved more than 350 lives but also earned her the highest civilian honor for bravery in India, the Ashok Chakra. Her story of sacrifice is a testament to her unwavering spirit and dedication.
Neerja Bhanot was born on September 7, 1964, in Chandigarh, to Harish and Rama Bhanot. From a young age, Neerja harbored a strong desire to soar in the skies. This dream led her to join Pan Am airlines, where she began her career as a flight attendant on January 16, 1986. Little did she know that within months, her resolve and courage would be put to the ultimate test.
It was an ordinary day at Karachi Airport when Pan Am Flight 73, carrying around 350 passengers, was waiting for its pilot. Suddenly, four terrorists stormed the plane, taking everyone onboard hostage. Their demands were clear: they wanted a pilot to fly them to their intended destination. When the Pakistani government refused, the terrorists turned to Neerja and her colleagues to gather the passengers’ passports, intending to identify and execute American citizens.
Neerja’s quick thinking and bravery shone through during these terrifying moments. She collected the passengers’ passports, but in a bold move, she hid the passports of the American passengers, thereby thwarting the terrorists’ plan. Her courage didn’t stop there; when a British passenger was taken to the plane’s entrance as a hostage, Neerja managed to save his life as well.
As hours turned into a tense standoff, Neerja realized that the situation could turn deadly once darkness fell. She quickly instructed her colleagues to distribute food and emergency cards to the passengers, preparing them for what was to come. She hoped that by filling the terrorists’ stomachs, they might calm down. Meanwhile, she and the passengers identified the emergency exits, readying themselves for a potential escape.
As night fell and the plane’s fuel ran out, plunging the aircraft into darkness, Neerja seized the moment. She opened the emergency exits, urging passengers to escape. Amid the chaos, the terrorists began firing indiscriminately. Neerja’s bravery ensured that most passengers escaped with their lives, though some were injured.
Just as she was about to make her escape, Neerja heard the cries of children still inside the plane. Despite the imminent danger, she turned back to save them. As she guided the children towards the emergency exit, the last remaining terrorist confronted her. Neerja shielded the children, pushing them towards safety. The terrorist opened fire, and Neerja was struck by several bullets. She succumbed to her injuries, sacrificing her life to save others.
Neerja Bhanot’s extraordinary bravery did not go unnoticed. Posthumously, she was awarded the Ashok Chakra by the Indian government, the Tamgha-e-Insaniyat by Pakistan, and the Justice for Crimes Award by the United States. Her legacy continues to inspire countless individuals across the world.
In 2004, India issued a postage stamp in her honor, and in 2016, the film “Neerja,” starring Sonam Kapoor, brought her story to a wider audience. Neerja Bhanot remains a symbol of unparalleled bravery and selflessness, a true daughter of India who gave her life to protect others.
As we remember Neerja on this day, let us honor her sacrifice by acknowledging her heroism and drawing inspiration from her courage. Neerja Bhanot is, without doubt, one of the greatest heroines of independent India.
