In the lush landscapes of Assam, a Christian missionary priest named Father Cruz arrived with a mission. He secured a position tutoring English to the young son of a prominent local family, right in their home. As days turned into weeks, the priest carefully observed the household dynamics and soon realized that the boy’s elderly grandmother held the real sway over everyone.
Convinced that winning her over to Christianity would ripple through the family and eventually the whole village, he focused his efforts on her. He shared vivid stories of Jesus healing lepers, restoring sight to the blind, and performing other wonders.
The grandmother listened patiently, then responded with a gentle smile: “My dear, those are impressive, but they pale in comparison to the divine feats of our Rama and Krishna!” She went on to recount how Rama transformed a mere stone into a vibrant woman with his touch, and how stones floated effortlessly on water simply by bearing Rama’s name—even today, legends say some still do.
The priest paused, momentarily stumped, but didn’t give up his subtle persuasion tactics.
One afternoon, he arrived with a special cake from the church and presented it to the grandmother. He assumed she would refuse it, given its origins, but to his surprise, she accepted and enjoyed it without hesitation.
Overjoyed, the priest let out a gleeful, almost wild laugh, his face beaming with victory. “See, Mother! You’ve partaken of the church’s blessed offering—you’re now a Christian!“The grandmother, with a firm tug on his ear and a twinkle in her eye, fired back: “Oh, you sly one! If eating your cake just once makes me a Christian, then think about this: I serve you meals from my home every single day—why haven’t you turned Hindu yet, you thankless fellow? You breathe the pure air and drink the sacred water of this timeless land rooted in Sanatana Dharma—so by your own logic, every part of you should already be Hindu!“
This quick-witted elder, who staunchly defended her faith and heritage against misguided influences, is remembered in circulating tales as the bold revolutionary Kamala Devi Hazarika from Assam. Though her story inspires many within the region, it’s worth sharing wider to highlight such spirited defenses of cultural identity.
A powerful exploration of two divine energies and their hidden unity.
