Tu Ya Main (2026) Review: Is the Adarsh Gourav Croc-Thriller Worth Watching?

A Tale of Two Influencers

Bejoy Nambiar’s Tu Ya Main (2026) is a weirdly entertaining, if uneven, addition to the Bollywood survival thriller genre. An official remake of the 2018 Thai hit The Pool, the film reimagines the high-stakes premise through the lens of modern Indian social media culture. The plot centers on Maruti (Adarsh Gourav), a hustling rapper from Nalasopara, and Avani (Shanaya Kapoor), a polished South Mumbai influencer known as “Ms. Vanity.” What begins as a cross-class “collab” romance quickly spirals into a nightmare when the duo finds themselves trapped in a derelict, deep-end swimming pool during a monsoon—accompanied by a very hungry, very real crocodile.

Adarsh Gourav: The Clear MVP

The film’s greatest asset is undoubtedly Adarsh Gourav. Carrying the mantle of the “MVP,” Gourav brings a layered vulnerability to Maruti that prevents the character from becoming a mere Gully Boy caricature. He sells the street-smart charm of a Nalasopara dreamer in the first act and transitions seamlessly into raw, physical survival panic in the second. His commitment to the tense, gory sequences in the pool makes the stakes feel genuine. Opposite him, Shanaya Kapoor shows noticeable growth from her previous outings, though her character, the “lonely rich girl,” lacks the narrative meat required to match Gourav’s intensity. Their chemistry holds steady during the satirical first half but truly finds its footing when the survival instincts kick in.

Style and Survival in the Second Half

Once the crocodile enters the pool and the monsoon rains begin to fill the concrete trap, Tu Ya Main finally wakes up. This is where Bejoy Nambiar’s signature slick direction takes over. The second half is a masterclass in claustrophobic tension, utilizing tight framing and immersive sound design to keep the audience on edge. While the VFX for the reptile are occasionally obvious, the mix of practical effects and clever editing creates several genuine jump scares and anxiety-inducing moments. There is a perverse fun in the “couple’s therapy via crocodile” angle, as the life-or-death situation forces a raw honesty between the two protagonists that their curated online lives never allowed.

Pacing Issues and First-Half Lag

However, the film isn’t without its flaws. The first hour drags significantly, bogged down by a sluggish pace and forced romance beats that feel clichéd. The satire on influencer culture, while pointed at times, often feels like it’s punching down or retreading familiar ground. At a runtime of over two hours, the movie feels unnecessarily stretched; many viewers will find themselves wishing the crocodile would make its entrance much sooner. Some of the editing choices during the climax rely too heavily on slow-motion tension, leading to diminishing returns as the “damsel in distress” tropes begin to resurface. Furthermore, the social commentary regarding urban development and displaced wildlife feels tacked on rather than organically integrated into the thriller framework.

The Honest Verdict

Ultimately, Tu Ya Main is a tale of two halves: a mediocre influencer rom-com that transforms into a gripping, if slightly silly, creature feature. It may not be the groundbreaking masterpiece the pre-release hype suggested, but it is a solid popcorn watch for those who enjoy high-concept survival cinema. If you go in with medium expectations, you’ll be rewarded with a committed performance from Adarsh Gourav and some genuinely thrilling sequences that justify the ticket price. It is a perversely enjoyable “reels and reptiles” flick that works best when it stops trying to be a social drama and starts being a monster movie.
