India’s First Fully Digital Census

On the home front, India has officially embarked on the 2026 Fully Digital Census, the world’s largest administrative exercise. After a 16-year gap, this 16th Census is the first to be fully digital, utilizing a mobile app and a new self-enumeration portal. While the overall Phase 1 (House Listing and Housing Census) runs from April to September, today marks a critical transition: states like Bihar and several others have just opened their self-enumeration windows. Over 3 million officials are conducting the verification, which includes 33 specific questions on housing and amenities. Parallel to this, the economy faces a ripple effect from the West Asian conflict, as soybean meal exports struggle due to shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
