Supreme Court Stays Executions in Mangaluru POCSO Case

New Delhi | April 13, 2026

The Supreme Court of India has stayed the execution of three death-row convicts—Jay Singh, Mukesh Singh, and Manish Thirki—involved in the 2021 gang rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Mangaluru.

While the court did not overturn their convictions, a three-judge bench led by Justice Vikram Nath halted the sentences, citing a failure by the Karnataka High Court to properly consider mitigating circumstances before confirming the death penalty.

Current Legal Status:

  • Mitigation Inquiry: The court has ordered a 16-week inquiry into the convicts’ socio-economic backgrounds, psychiatric health, and jail conduct.
  • The “Sinner’s Future” Principle: The stay aligns with recent judicial trends (e.g., Mohd. Firoz v. State of MP) that require courts to explore if a convict is capable of reform before awarding the ultimate punishment.
