Delhi Rains Bring Relief As Heatwave Breaks
Quick Summary: After a week of punishing 44°C temperatures, a sudden Western Disturbance brought heavy rain and dust storms to Delhi-NCR this morning. The IMD has lowered the heatwave alert as temperatures are expected to settle around 38°C.

The national capital finally breathed a sigh of relief this morning as dark clouds and heavy showers swept across the region. For nearly a week, residents had been struggling with a punishing heatwave where temperatures flirted with the 44°C mark. The sudden shift in weather began in the early hours of Wednesday, with strong winds and dust storms clearing the way for a refreshing downpour that covered most of Lutyens’ Delhi and the surrounding suburbs.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this atmospheric activity was triggered by a Western Disturbance. Within just one hour of the rainfall, the maximum temperature—which was predicted to hit 41°C—plummeted significantly. Forecasters now expect the day’s peak to settle closer to 38°C. This change has allowed authorities to lower the “Yellow Alert” that had been in place for the past few days, giving the city’s power grid a much-needed break as cooling demand stabilizes.

While the rain has brought joy to commuters and students, it did cause some minor traffic delays due to waterlogging in low-lying areas. However, the overall mood in the city remains positive as the humidity has also dropped. The RWFC has predicted light to moderate rain accompanied by lightning and gusty winds for the rest of the day. For a city that was bracing for one of its hottest Aprils on record, today’s weather is a welcome and much-celebrated surprise.
