Srija A’s Revolutionary Biodegradable Pots: The Future of Sustainable Gardening!
In March 2020, during a tree-planting activity at Zilla Parishad High School in Chintalkunta, Telangana, 14-year-old student Srija A made a groundbreaking discovery. While digging the soil, she found a plastic bag buried underground—a leftover from previous plantation drives. Concerned about plastic waste, she set out to create an eco-friendly alternative. Her solution? Biodegradable pots made from groundnut shell pulp—a sustainable innovation that helps reduce plastic pollution.
How Groundnut Shells Became the Perfect Alternative
Srija turned to her mathematics teacher, Augustien P, for guidance. She learned that groundnut shells are rich in phosphorus and calcium, making them highly beneficial for plant growth. These shells also retain water effectively and decompose slowly, making them an ideal material for plant pots.
After multiple trials, Srija successfully developed sturdy biodegradable pots by blending natural ingredients with groundnut shell pulp. These eco-friendly planters break down within 20 days, enriching the soil and eliminating the need for plastic planters.
Recognition and Future Plans
Srija’s innovation didn’t go unnoticed. In September 2020, she received the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Innovation Award for her sustainable creation. With support from T-Works, Telangana, she now aims to scale up production to 10,000 planters by July 2021. Her goal is to promote sustainable gardening solutions and encourage her community to adopt eco-friendly alternatives.
