As the deadline approaches for announcing India’s squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s World Cup 2024, the BCCI’s selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar faces a critical decision regarding the wicketkeeper position. The BCCI has an array of talented options to choose from, including Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, KL Rahul, and Dinesh Karthik. However, one standout name in contention is none other than the retired Mahendra Singh Dhoni, whose recent performances in the ongoing IPL 2024 have been nothing short of spectacular.

In the IPL 2024 season, Dhoni showcased his prowess with a remarkable innings of 91 runs off just 35 balls, boasting an impressive strike rate of 260.

Former Indian cricketers Irfan Pathan and Varun Aaron have both advocated for Dhoni’s inclusion in India’s final 15 for the World Cup. Aaron expressed the possibility of a wildcard entry for Dhoni, emphasizing his invaluable experience and skill set. Similarly, Pathan echoed this sentiment, labeling Dhoni’s potential inclusion as a “wildest card” but acknowledging the exceptional form he’s currently exhibiting with the bat.

Pathan recently unveiled his own T20 squad for India’s World Cup campaign, featuring key players like Virat Kohli, Shivam Dube, and Rishabh Pant, with Rohit Sharma designated as skipper. While he endorsed all-rounder Hardik Pandya’s inclusion, Pathan emphasized the importance of his bowling contributions.

In his squad selection, Pathan opted to exclude players such as KL Rahul, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Dinesh Karthik, and Tilak Varma. Additionally, Axar Patel, Harshal Patel, Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, and Deepak Chahar did not make the cut in Pathan’s probables list.

The deliberations within the BCCI continue as they weigh their options for the final squad, considering both experience and current form. With Dhoni’s exceptional IPL performances and the backing of seasoned cricketers like Pathan and Aaron, the prospect of his return to the international stage remains a captivating storyline as India prepares for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States.
