Eman Sami Maghdid was shot and killed by her brother for wearing a crop top
On March 6, 2022, a popular internet celebrity, Eman Sami Maghdid, 20, was killed by her own 17-year-old brother. As per the reports, the boy believed that his sister was breaking her community’s rules, so he decided to murder her. The Kurdish shot the girl eight to nine times on a road in Erbil, Iraq.
It should be noted that Maghdid was not the only honour killing victim in Iraq this year. More than ten women have been killed in Iraq’s Kurdistan area in less than two months, including Doski Azad, a 23-year-old transgender woman who was also shot dead, allegedly by her brother. She moved around a lot because she was afraid of being attacked, and her body was discovered in a ditch.
In yet another incident, a well-known Iraqi YouTuber and comedian Mohammed Al Esawi shot and killed his 14-year-old daughter when she answered the door to a stranger, thinking it was her brother.
According to media accounts, the stranger with whom the victim was standing was a young man who had previously proposed to her but been turned down.
As soon as he spotted his daughter standing with that man, the father, unable to control his rage, pulled out his firearm and fired three times at her, believing they were planning something.
The rise of orthodoxy in a culture where women are usually treated as second-class citizens has also been aided by the Islamic State and other terror groups. Women are now compelled to follow backward practises like covering their bodies in public and not leaving the house without a male guardian, thanks to the rise of Islamic fundamentalism.
