R Praggnanandhaa Makes History, Claims First Classical Win Against Carlsen!
In a monumental upset, 18-year-old Indian Grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa defeated the world’s number one chess player, Magnus Carlsen! This incredible victory took place on May 29th at the prestigious Norway Chess tournament, propelling Praggnanandhaa to the sole lead.
Playing with the white pieces, Praggnanandhaa defied the odds and outwitted Carlsen on his home turf. This classical chess match, where players have ample time for strategic moves, saw Praggnanandhaa break a three-game drawing streak against Carlsen.
This win marks a significant milestone for Praggnanandhaa. Not only did it push Carlsen down to fifth place, but it also cemented his place as only the fourth Indian chess master to ever defeat Carlsen in classical chess. It’s particularly sweet considering Praggnanandhaa lost to Carlsen in the World Cup finals last year.
Meanwhile, Praggnanandhaa’s sister, R Vaishali, continues to dominate the women’s section of the Norway Chess tournament. She maintained her lead after drawing her match on May 29th.
