She graduated from Seth Anandilal Roder High School in Santacruz in 1989 and initially pursued a course in Medical Laboratory Technology to appease her father. By 1991, at the tender age of 20, she began her career as a diesel locomotive assistant driver, becoming the first woman in India and Asia to hold such a position. Her achievement was recognized by the Limca Book of Records in 1995, a testament to her groundbreaking role in the railways.

Rising Through the Ranks

Mumtaz’s journey did not stop with her initial success. In 2005, her hard work and dedication earned her the promotion to Second Motorwoman. For over 25 years, she operated trains on India’s busiest and most crowded railway route, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus – Thane section. Her impeccable service and skill were honored with several accolades, including the Nari Shakti Puraskar, India’s highest civilian honor for women, and the Railway General Manager Award in 2015.
