Step-By-Step Recipes For Panchamrit And Mewa Paag For Janmashtami Bhog

Both Panchamrit and Mewa Paag (also known as Panchmewa Paag) are central to the Janmashtami altar—Panchamrit serves as the holy bath and primary prasad, while Mewa Paag provides a rich, shelf-stable sweet made from roasted nuts bound in sugar syrup.

1. Traditional Panchamrit

Panchamrit represents five sacred elements: milk (purity), curd (prosperity), ghee (strength), honey (sweetness), and sugar (bliss).

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup fresh raw unpasteurized cow milk (or chilled boiled milk)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh unflavored curd (dahi)
  • 1 teaspoon pure cow ghee
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon powdered sugar or crushed mishri
  • 1 tablespoon chopped foxnuts (makhana)
  • 4-5 fresh Tulsi (holy basil) leaves

1.Combine the core five elements:Use a silver or brass vessel for auspiciousness if available.

In a clean bowl, whisk the curd lightly. Add the milk, honey, powdered sugar (or mishri), and melted ghee. Stir gently until the sugar dissolves completely.

2.Add garnishes and consecrate:

Add the chopped makhana and tear 3-4 Tulsi leaves into the mixture by hand (avoid cutting Tulsi with a knife). Mix once and place a whole Tulsi leaf on top before offering.

2. Panchmewa Paag (Nuts Fudge)

Mewa Paag is a traditional North Indian festive sweet prepared by roasting five types of dry fruits in ghee and coating them in one-thread sugar syrup until set.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup foxnuts (makhana)
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds
  • 1/2 cup chopped cashews
  • 1/2 cup dry grated coconut (chuhara or dry copra)
  • 2 tablespoons melon seeds (magaz)
  • 3 tablespoons ghee
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder

1.Ghee-roast the dry fruits:Keep flame low to prevent burning.

Heat ghee in a pan. Individually roast the almonds, cashews, makhana, melon seeds, and grated coconut until crisp and fragrant. Transfer them to a plate to cool.

2.Pulse into a coarse mix:

Once cooled, coarsly pulse the makhana, almonds, cashews, and melon seeds in a blender. Do not powder them completely; keep a crunchy texture. Mix in the grated coconut.

3.Prepare one-thread sugar syrup:

In a deep pan, combine 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water. Boil over medium heat until it achieves a 1-thread consistency (a single thin thread forms between your thumb and index finger when tested). Add cardamom powder.

4.Bind and set the Paag:

Reduce heat to low, add the coarse nut mixture into the syrup, and stir continuously for 2-3 minutes until the mixture thickens and leaves the sides of the pan. Transfer immediately to a greased plate, flatten evenly with a spatula, let cool slightly, and cut into squares.
